Finding Our Voice Together: The Power of Community Through Song in Indianapolis

On Monday, September 29, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir will host one of the city’s most uplifting traditions: Community Sing. This community singing event invites everyone—from experienced vocalists to those who haven’t sung in years—to join in an evening of joy, connection, and music.

“This is not a performance for an audience — it’s an experience we create together,” says Artistic Director Dr. Eric Stark. “You don’t have to be a trained singer to belong here. All you need is a willingness to lift your voice with others.”

At Indianapolis Community Sing, there’s no stage, no auditions, and no “audience” in the traditional sense. Every person in the room is a participant. It’s a free singing event designed to unite voices across the city and celebrate the power of music in community.

Why Singing Together in Indianapolis Matters

Music is one of the few things that transcends background, beliefs, and experience. In a room filled with voices, everyone belongs.

“When we sing together, something remarkable happens,” Dr. Stark explains. “Breathing together, listening to one another, and blending our sound connects us in ways that words alone can’t.”

The benefits of group singing are proven—it can reduce stress, improve mood, and strengthen social bonds. But you don’t need a study to tell you that. Spend just one evening at this community singing event, and you’ll feel it for yourself.

Led by the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir—Joined by the City

Guided by Dr. Eric Stark, Community Sing blends the artistry of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir with the energy of voices from across our neighborhoods.

“We design the music so everyone can jump right in,” says Dr. Stark. “It’s accessible, uplifting, and chosen to make you feel like you’ve been part of the choir for years—even if this is your first time singing with us.”

We’ll provide the music—easy-to-learn choral selections chosen for their beauty and accessibility—and our choir members will sing alongside you. Whether you know your way around a score or simply love to hum along to the radio, this event is for you.

A Reflection of the Indianapolis Community

Indianapolis is a city of neighborhoods, traditions, and shared hopes. The choir reflects that diversity, and when we sing together, our unique voices don’t disappear—they create harmony.

“In a single evening, you’ll witness strangers becoming collaborators,” Dr. Stark says. “That’s the magic of choral music; it turns individual voices into something greater than the sum of their parts.”

In just one night, different timbres and tones become one sound. And for a few songs, the world feels a little more connected. That’s the power of music in a community.
