One Month Away

It's pretty heady stuff…to know that we, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, is responsible for bringing to life the brand new ZABUR. Written by American composer Mohammed Fairouz, and set for full symphony orchestra, large mixed choir, children's choir and soloists (tenor and baritone), ZABUR is a setting of familiar psalm texts cast in a dramatic narrative setting to reflect struggles both current and centuries old. The miracle, of course, is what the Psalms reveal to us in terms of how we deal with such challenges.

Preparing for a world premiere…well, it's a bit daunting. We are the first to perform this work. Will our treatment of it match the composer's expectations? Will our singing adequately express the beauty and drama of the work's core message? Will my tempi be right?? What if I screw up and go too fast?

As scary as these risks feel today, we know they pale in comparison to the joy we will feel in just under a month when we present this work to our community in our performance (Friday, April 24, at Hilbert Circle Theatre). We believe that no great art is ever made with any great sense of certainly about how it will be received. And we believe that the pursuit of new music gives us all a chance to grow, to learn to be better musicians and citizens. We are grateful at the opportunity to bring this new work to our community, and look forward to your participation in the many events we have planned. Stay tuned for more details coming to this blog very soon!
